What's your favourite type of pub?
|
With it being Saturday, and with all the boozers closed down (and World's End on telly the other day), lets talk pubs.
Not necessarily your individual favourite establishment, but just the type of pub.
A small local pub on a corner full of old sods during the day and unchanged since 1846?
A country pub with a roaring fire and proper home made grub?
A high street Wetherspoons full of pissheads by day and "out out" crowd at night?
Gastropub serving burgers on bits of wood?
City wine bar type gafs full of office bods?
Rough as fuck flat roof council estate pubs where its £2 a pint of rotten Holsten Pils and you get stabbed in the toilets?
Rock pubs full of smelly cunts with ponytails that do all weird obscure beers/ciders?
Any more types I missed?
For me it depends on the time of year. High street type places in summer (preferably with a garden) and local/country pubs in winter.
Discuss.

It’s obviously very subjective, but for me you can’t beat a village / country pub that serves real ales and good food. A nice beer garden is a bonus, as is a roaring fire in the winter.
Fortunately for me, I’m talking about my local in Lancashire, the pub whose football team I have managed for almost 20 years.

A few of the gafs round covent garden could probably be classed as "dive bar" imitations, but not been there in years. Tended to just be filled with tourists.

I know what you mean. The only places in the UK that try and imitate to any degree (the aesthetic etc) tend to be student pubs.
Our drinking cultures are a bit different

Intrepid fox, that’s a blast from the past, last went in there circa 2001. Long gone now.

Dive bars work in the states, I remember going to a great one in Chicago, also good jukebox, and no food, although you could get a great hot dog from the place next door, and bring it back in. I like the fact that you can bring your own food in.I wasn’t that keen when someone would bring a full Chinese in though and stink the place out.Often wondered how an old school American dive bar would fair in England? It’d have to be along the lines of The Intrepid Fox I’d imagine, grimy and punky, but friendly enough.

Actually the Nap in Boscastle has more atmosphere (in a crack your head on the door frame way). Walking up that hill to it is pretty thirsty work.

Looking at the pics of it Joe, that wasn’t the one I was in. Looks my sort of bar though.

A proper pubby old country pub with good food, good beer and a fire. The Welly in Boscastle is my favourite. My local is pretty good, it is a converted water mill.

I loved Rossi’s. Was supposed to be out there last month with my old man - have rebooked for October and hope that’s a goer...

Joe, possibly.
Spent every night of my trip in there, but never once paid any attention to the name of the place!

Not sure we have the equivalent over here, it would just be rough old boozers, which can also have a certain charm.

I was gonna ask what Vibe is. I now hope pubs never open again just so geoffpikey can't go in one.
